cPanel email guide

What to do when cPanel email stops working

Separate DNS problems from server problems before changing random settings.

First checks

  • Confirm whether inbound, outbound, webmail, IMAP, POP, or SMTP is affected.
  • Check MX records and whether mail is local or remote in cPanel.
  • Inspect Exim and Dovecot status if you have WHM or SSH access.
  • Look for full mailboxes, full disks, expired SSL, or DNS changes.
  • Save bounce messages and full headers before deleting test messages.

Common causes

cPanel email often breaks after DNS migrations, hostname changes, certificate renewals, firewall changes, mailbox quota issues, or mail routing settings that no longer match the domain's MX records.
